Mason’s Season-High 31 Not Enough for Chargers vs. No. 5 South Suburban

Freshman Gabe Mason (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) went off for a season-high 31 points, but nationally ranked South Suburban held off a strong effort from the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team in beating the Chargers 85-75 Saturday afternoon. 

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg (1-5) trailed 32-28 with 5 minutes left in the first half after a 3-pointer from sophomore Brock Bower-Preece (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs), but the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (11-3) closed the half with a 12-4 spurt to lead 44-32.
  • Mason scored nine straight points for Sandburg to get the Chargers within 58-49 with 11:30 left, but South Suburban rattled off a 9-0 run to push its lead back to 16.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Mason was on fire in the second half, scoring 25 of his 31 after intermission. He finished the game 11 of 15 from the field, connected on seven of his eight 3-point attempts and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had 13 points, four assists and three steals.
  • Bower-Preece scored 11 and dished out a team-best five assists.
